What is an Acre?

An acre is a unit of land area equal to 43,560 square feet. That equals 4,840 square yards, 4,046.86 square meters, or 0.4047 hectares. A square-shaped acre lot measures 208.71 ft on each side.

The acre originated as the amount of land a yoke of oxen could plow in one day. Today it remains the standard land measurement in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

How to Convert Square Foot to Acres

Divide the total square footage by 43,560. That single division gives you acres.

Acres = Square Feet / 43,560

Step 1: Measure or obtain the total area in square feet. For a rectangular lot, multiply length x width. A 200 ft x 300 ft lot = 60,000 sq ft.

Step 2: Divide by 43,560. Example: 60,000 / 43,560 = 1.378 acres.

To reverse the conversion, multiply acres by 43,560 to get square feet. Example: 2.5 acres x 43,560 = 108,900 sq ft.

Worked Example

A property listing shows a lot at 150 ft x 250 ft. Total area: 37,500 sq ft. Divide by 43,560 = 0.861 acres, or about 7/8 of an acre. In metric terms, that equals 3,484 m² (0.348 hectares).
