Yard square footage is the total outdoor area of the property. Measure front yard and back yard separately, then add the totals. For the grass-only area, use the lawn calculator; to plan multi-zone projects, the landscaping calculator.
Getting started
To calculate yard square footage, measure length × width of the front yard and back yard in feet. Sum both for total yard area. Subdivide into lawn zones, garden beds, patio, deck, and walkways for landscaping plans.
Measure length × width of front yard and back yard separately in feet.
Subdivide into lawn, garden beds, patio, deck, and walkways. Calculate each zone separately.
Use yard area to estimate sod, mulch, paving, and plant costs.
Quick reference
Material pricing
Yard landscaping averages $4-12 per sq ft installed. Multiply yard area by price per unit of sod, mulch, or paving for material total.
There are 2 steps to calculate material cost:
Add 10-15% material overage for irregular yard shapes and edge cuts.
FAQ
Measure your yard length and width in feet and multiply them together. A 100x80 ft yard is 8,000 square feet. For irregular shapes, break into rectangles and triangles.
A quarter-acre is 10,890 square feet. That is roughly equivalent to a 100x109 ft lot or a 75x145 ft lot. This is a common suburban yard size.
Measure the perimeter (total distance around the yard) in feet for fencing. A 100x80 ft yard needs 360 linear feet of fencing (2x100 + 2x80). Square footage helps estimate cost per linear foot.
Calculate the garden bed area in square feet, then multiply by depth in feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 200 sq ft bed with 3 inches of mulch needs: 200 x 0.25 / 27 = 1.85 cubic yards.
Divide square feet by 9 to get square yards. A 9,000 sq ft yard equals 1,000 square yards. This conversion is useful when buying sod or landscape fabric sold by the square yard.
A half-acre is 21,780 square feet. That is approximately a 150x145 ft lot. Half-acre yards are common in semi-rural and large suburban properties.
